우리는 공통의 의미를 공유하는 공통의 말을 사용하지만 가끔 말의 뜻을 잘못 이해하고 소통이 되지 않는 경우가 있다. 이는 말의 모호성에서 비롯된 것으로 어떤 말들은 일대일로 의미가 대응되지 않는다. 특정 말들이 뜻하는 의미가 다양하다는 것은 어느 하나에 속하지 않는다는 점에서 회색적이다. 그중 ‘붉다’, ‘노랗다’와 같이 회색과는 관련 없어 보이는 단어들이, 의미의 세계에서는 색 이외 다른 뜻으로 사용될 수 있다는 점에서 회색적이란 것은 모순적이면서 흥미로운 점이다.
